We have just what you're looking for, the Volksagen Type II workshop manual:
1950-1962 http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=V262. We just
published this paper manual using original 1953/54, 1955 and 1959 factory
workshop manuals. Retail is $109.95 and I know the Bus Depot has them at a
good price.

Stan, thanks for the reply. I looked into my notes and it is the pre-1963
manual i'm looking for. I have the 63-67 manual and i heard there is the
older one but long since out of print.

Also, thanks for the words regarding the vanagon manual on cd. I have been
itching to get a copy of it but now will stick with the book. I'll also
consider getting a newwer book edition as mine is pretty old c.1988 or so.
