Should be a-okay, *IF* you have all the parts of the cooling system in good working order.

In particular, the thermostat and control wire, and flaps. It so, and if you use the correct oil (5w10?) the air-cooled would have fewer things to fail, and would give you the advantage of nearly instantaneous HOT heat if you do some of the ducting insulation and fan improvement on our site. www.bulley-helwett.com/VWindex/

Ours (a 1976 at the time) kept us shirt-sleeve toasty at -10 in a blizzard in SD/Montana.

I was just wondering if anyone has had experience in operating an aircooled Vanagon/Westy in really frigid temps, like up around Whitehorse, YT in the winter. Like it can get minus 50F up there and I am curious what it takes to operate at those temperatures. I drove a Type II for several years in Alaska, but never encountered anything colder than about -30F when driving. But I have seen it colder around Whitehorse.

Just curious. The knowledge might help me in decisions about Aircooled vs WaterCooled for a Westy.
