Good going Frank! If I turned my air cooled 6500 rpms it would definitely be a one time test. The rest of the time would be invested in sweeping up sharp broken engine parts from the roadway. I'm still sitting on that forged steel counter weighted Type IV crankshaft. I took it to the crankshaft shop and the guy declared it perfectly straight, 10/10 perfect on the mains and rods. He also ran it on his balancer and couldn't add or take a gram off. Now I just got to figure if I'm going to plug it into an engine or sell it off. I've got my Type IV engine inventory up to five now so I guess I can feel safe taking a road trip. I'm considering having some Vanagon heads ceramic coated in the right spots, ceramic coating some piston tops and building an engine with a windage tray, notched rods, sodium filled exhaust valves. All that seems like a waste when you look at the throttle body bore on an 83 Injected Air Cooled ............... figure I'll explore a later model injection system with more air flow capacity on the intake side. Alternate would be big Webber Carbs with some head porting. With all that done the cheapest ten year old Hundai would still out run me. It would really be a great engine to put on a 75cfm air compressor or in a light aircraft. I've got a 78 Combi coming my way with the already Type IV engine that weighs about 2800 pounds or less and that might be some sport but with a 5300 pound Westy, high performance just doesn't fit in the same sentence. Just think how fast you could run if you stripped all that Westy stuff off and got down below 3000 pounds.
