I had this happen to me on a '70 Olds 98 LS, it turned out to be a plugged tranny vent. As the transmision heated, the only way for the expanding air to get out was through the dipstick tube. On this Olds, it spewed on to the exhaust manifold.
I'd say, checking for a pluged vent would be a good starting point. Never had an auto Vanagon, so I don't know where the vent is, I'm guessing it's on top of the tranny, (where else would they put it?).
