It won't hurt to put one new lifter in to see if it fixes the problem. If it is a fix then you did the right thing. Depending on the engine miles and cam condition you then have to decide if you're going to install a whole set of new lifters. I'm not familiar with Waser boxers but I'd done single lifter replacements in Air Cooled and got the fix.
