You shouldn't get an over-voltage condition if the car you're jumping from has a working voltage regulator. Just don't jump it with no battery, or with a totally dry battery -- the battery load has to be there to smooth out spikes from the charging system.

What I have heard will kill computerized injection systems is doing arc welding on the car without removing the computer first. No idea if it's true.
