Simon, what is it you are trying to determine? If you are putting the inline 4 in as a conversion you should check the position of the crankshaft pulley both up and down and side to side. This will determine the angle of the tranny more precisely. The crank pulley center position should remain the same as it was with the waterboxer. I assume you have the tranny mounted with the standard Syncro tranny mounts. You need to keep the engine/tranny centerline lined up with the center driveshaft or driveshaft problems will occur. In 2 WD models this is not so important. Syncros need a different engine carrier position to accomplish the proper alignment with the driveline.
