This is actually a secret that VW has tried to keep under wraps for many years. However I have uncovered this conspiracy and will let you in on it as well.

The folks are VW wanted to get marketing info to custom tailor their cars to us as the consumer. They had lost touch with us in the '80s and wanted to get the market share back. So they came up with a insidious plot. Install minature cameras and microphones in all VWs. Route the information to a small black box hidden under the car or in the engine bay which would transmit the video and audio feed directly to Germany. Now they watched us for years, seeing the average VW owner transformed from a "Love Child" of the 60s to a "Not-so-young Urban Professional" of the 90s they tweaked their product line and marketing to match us. As time went on, with their mission accoplished, they got bored watching us age and go bald. They abandoned their project. The only thing that remains are some cleverly disguised cameras (look just like an interior light bulb to the naked eye), micro phones (built into your original speakers, how crafty!), and these little black boxes which were the recording and sending devices.

In order for us to show VW how upset we are that they spied on us in this way and used our own weaknesses against us, I say everyone remove these insidious black boxes from your vans. Put them in a small box and ship them to Wolfsburg. After the VW execs see that the "jig is up" they will repent and send us large cash settlements to prevent a class action law suit. Then we can finally have enough money to buy a new VW. :-) Is it Friday yet?

Can anyone tell me what the function of this thing is? (Yes Malcolm, I already looked in the archives) It's a black box about 3" square that the speedometer cable passes through. A 5-wire connector is attached, 3 of 5 contacts occupied. Located under the van just forward of the front, left wheel on a 2WD. Not all vans seem to have them. Just about all the Golf/Jettas I looked at at the junkyard on Saturday have them mounted under the hood up where the wipers are in front of the driver. On the Golf/Jetta, the wires from this thing pass through the firewall in the same bundle with the wires for the cruise control vacuum pump... but this "recorder" doesn't have anything to do with the cruise control system, does it?

Thanks, Doug Fitz-Randolph Freeport, ME
