I don't have to login when I walk into an Office Depot, but I do when I buy
online from them. And besides, comparing 7/11s to Internet
businesses/storefronts is a bit like comparing apples and oranges. I do a
heavy amount of internet shopping and most places have a login before
putting things in the shopping cart. It's a bit more secure IMHO. And
I've never felt it was an invasion of my privacy either, even though a lot
of the time it's used to track marketing inquiries, sales and other stuff
to determine what moves, what stinks and who's a looky-loo. I make sure
that whatever sites I sign up with that I "uncheck" the box asking if I
want to mailed specials, etc., 'cause I got enough crap coming from 9 lists
I'm subscribed to everyday.
All of the big boy VW wholesale warehouse/importers (people that you will
usually never deal with 'cause they don't do retail) require a login to
protect their display of pricing depending on the type of account you may
have with them. I do this on a daily basis, sometimes keeping a couple of
windows open for most of the day in at least two vendors to instantaneously
view a cost and how many on-hand when needed.
Gotta remember, the VW retail business vendors are a bit looser crowd. In
addition, many site hosts charge for bandwith (number of hits
perminute/hour/day) and that kind of costs add up. As the VW industry
grows online and the bill for exceeding the bandwidth at the host ISP gets
to be a bit outa hand, this feature will eventually make its way into our
lives, like it or not. In discussing it lately with some of my friends in
the biz, it's becoming an issue due to sheer volume of people accessing
their sites. Not logging into a site may be your loss and not theirs
eventually.
OTOH, George Orwell is closer than you may think ;-)
