Before you take the zipper out try squeezing the part that pulls the zipper together (what is this part called anyway? "slider" maybe) with a pair of pliers.  The part will stretch over time and does not put the nylon coils together properly.  I learned this trick from a girl who repairs sports equipment,  such as hockey bags.
Give it a try.
