A newbie reading Stan's revelation earlier Tuesday, might wonder how someone, that 8 years ago knew nothing (self admitted) could now be an expert. -------------------------- The trick to becoming an expert --------------------------- 1) Buy every 80-83 Air Cooled Vanagon and Westy you can find. 2) Wreck out the Vanagons and stockpile the parts. 3) Restore five Westfalias back to useful life. 4) Hang around local machine shops and give them instructions as they go so you get your heads, cranks etc. machined as you like. 5) Buy engines out of Junkyard, pull them yourself, clean every part and sell the parts. 6) Run from front suspension rebuilds (I hate springs). 7) Drive your own Westy a few hundred thousand miles and see for yourself what events cause cylinder head temps to rise, oil pressure to drop and what leave the oil needs to be for the engine to run its coolest. 8) Examine every engine part carefully as you disassemble junk yard or other Type IV engines. The cause of failure is always there. Very few Type IV engines wear out, they are murdered by abuse, neglect, poor rebuilds. After you become a failure detective you can build your first good engine. 9) Put all of your profits from parts sales into new parts for the Westy that you drive, replace all moving parts because this is a restoration project, not a repair job. That is 90% of it.
