Thanks Simon! I'll get the heater hose and replace the rest with that (unfortunately I spent the dough and bought the whole set already from Bus Depot). The guy at Bus Depot said he'd never replaced them before - all he knew was from their not-so-clear diagram so he wasn't much help. Thanks for the tips!

Where both hoses disappear at the front, is just above the radiator fan- they go to (and from) the front heater core. This is on an '86 syncro Westy w/aux. heater. FWIW, you don't need to use VW-specific parts to replace your hoses. I'm currently in the middle of an engine swap, and I've replaced all of my heater hose with off-the-shelf 5/8" generic heater hose. Fits perfectly, much cheaper. -Simon
