I don't know which opinion your are seconding but the fellow who posted that "it just fits" was persuaded that it doesn't w/o modifications to the column or the wheel itself. Furthermore, there are two splined shaft sizes available for A2's. The early ones are the same as the A1. Easy fit if you can do the column thing. The splines match. They just sit too high to contact the horn and turnsignal contacts. The Vanagon wheels have a wider mouth to allow them to sit furthe down the column. The later ones (after 90...I think) have the larger finer spline wheels. Probably as a prelude to airbag-equipped wheels as those have the fine spines.

As for the steering wheel obstructing the gauges, well it does that very well.
