Subject: Question about syncro brake calipers (ATE vs Girling)
Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

I have been wondering about this for a while. Some syncro Vanagons seem to have the same calipers that 2wd 86-91 Vanagons have (Girling) and some of them have a different caliper (ATE). I looked in the ETKA and it shows both part numbers, but doesn't really tell you which vans had which calipers. It does give a cutoff point for the ATE calipers for the 1990 model year. What gives here? Is there any way of knowing without looking under the van which calipers you have?

My second question is this: Say you have the ATE calipers on a syncro and you want to put on new calipers. Wouldn't the Girling Calipers (if you have the carriers and new pads) fit right in place of the ATE ones? Anyone have a clue? I suspect that the uprights are the same either way so that would mean that either caliper would bolt right up, and should be interchangeable, but some experience would be helpful (my syncro experience is limited just because we don't have many out in my neck of the woods). Any experience or advice would be appreciated.
