I have been told you have to use a special tool -- an "exhaust manifold
clamp spreader" -- or risk really hurting yourself. The clamps are
apparantly under a ton of tension. I have not attempted the job myself yet.

You can buy or rent the tool from RapidParts:
http://www.rapidparts.com/Pages/vwc030v.html . They want $75 for it, though.
I am sure others will know of a cheaper source.
