most bonk noises i have run into are usually suspension related to
bottoming out.  on a synchro i would not just be looking at your shocks
but the top where the spring plate is to see if you havent rusted out
or punched through. (you should have seen the strut sticking up through
the back of my jetta rear  shelf)
