I have the same problem on my 90 Westy. I think it is the timing because it tends to backfire a little when idling, but it drives great at speed. I found the Bentley specs for setting timing to be not much use for solving the problem. I wonder if older 2.1 WBX engines needed more customized timing settings to compensate for wear. Don't know.
