Actually, the VW Number for the starter is 068 911 023 D (the "3" looks a
lot like a "8").

Here are the starter numbers and their replacements:

068 911 023 D, 068 911 023 J, 068 911 023 M (the "M" starter replaces the
"D" and "J" starters as well).  The Bosch Rebuilt number for all three is
SR28X.

The original Bosch numbers are:

0001 317 011, 0001 317 016, & 0001 317 017

And FWIW, the solenoid is replaceable on the starters marked 068 911 023 D
& 023 J with Bosch 31 120 (VW 068 911 287 D).  On the 068 911 023 M starter
the solenoid is not replaceable - you must buy the whole enchilada...boo :-(.
