I have done this.  Buy the blue ice from Safeway or wherever, and freeze it
at home.  The more full you get the fridge, the longer it stays cold.  I
have also used a box of 100 Otter Pops as ice--they fit into all the small
spaces around things, and make a tasty snack later on.  On one trip (two
days), half of them were still frozen when I got home....
