Lew, the first place to start tracking down this problem is to check your idle speed with the Idle Stabilizer Valve (ISV) disconnected. Be sure the engine is warm, shut it down, disconnect the ISV, then start it again. Note the RPM. It should be around 850-900. If it is not, use the big flat screw and adjust accordingly. Then check your timing. If the timing is off, reset it, then readjust the idle speed. Let the engine cool, re-connect the ISV, and start the engine. It should idle about 1000-1100 rom until it warms up then should drop to 850 or 900. If when cold it still won't idle, you could have a vacumn leak or the ISV( round cylinder thingy on top of the engine) or ISV Control ( a box behind the right brake light). I had your problem, and it was a rotted crankcase vent tube. (on top of the engine)
