When using an adapter plate in a Syncro or automatic Vanagon for an inline -four, and the Diesel hardware, if they are available use the '83 Diesel Vanagon side bars instead of the '82 bars. The mounts are about 2" farther back where you need them, and you won't have to cut and weld. I learned this from another local conversionist who put a inline -four into a Vanagon with auto trans, and bought a pair of the later bars from me.
