I think Robert is talking about me, below. I used the 4 spd. ACW tranny that came stock in my '90 Vanagon. It has a tranny length equal to the 5 spd. that came in the '83 diesel. This longer length, than either the 4 spd. '80-'83 aircooled tranny or the 4 spd. '82 diesel tranny, requires the further "setback" of 1 1/2" that the '83 bars provide.

By the way, I recently did a run down I-5 starting in Clinton and filling in Aberdeen. The 1.8 RV engine took 9.9 gals. to go the 242 miles. There were 80-100 miles of "stop and go" type driving included in this tankful. This, in my equipment loaded Vanagon (about 4400 lbs. total including myself) and flowing with 70-75 mph traffic. I'm using the stock "swivel" exh. manifold (restrictive but the back pressure may have some benefit). All I've done is increased the AFM spring tension 3 notches and advanced the valve timing 6° (adjustable cam gear). Kirkland LT195/75R14 45psi front and 50psi rear.
