List,
    I got a call Sunday from a person that got my name off AIRS
list...............81 vanagon, air cooled fuel injected motor.

Guy told me it was bucking badly and just died he limped over to a member of
the local bus clubs house and crashed the night.  So I went out there this
AM to lend a hand.

AT first, no spark at all.  So swapped condenser, still nothing (original
condenser had tape on the wire) so swapped distributors and it had spark.
Ok timing was off, so set timing...............idled great.  when throttle
was given, there would be black huffs of smoke, and surging in the rpms.
So, swapped spark plugs......all were sooty from running rich.  Replaced
injector seals.  Tested fuel pressure............about 35 lbs at idle, and a
little under 30 when throttle is applied.  Still bucked.  So, swapped ECU
with my van.  Still bucked.

Swapped AFM.  Still bucked.  Swapped double relay.  still bucked.   What
the?  i left the guy a good fuel pressure regulator, and told him I would
come by with a used fuel pump in the morning.

O, also replaced fuel filter.  STILL bucked.  Replaced head temp sensor for
fuel injection as well.
