Subject: Cars that sit for ten years
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Recently I purchased a 66 Westy that the PO said had been stored for ten
years.
After driving it for about 700 miles locally:
Changed to oil & Filter first and of course added marvel mystery oil to
the engine and gas tank.
The engine doesn't smoke and I can't see any oil usage or dripping.
The CV boots disintegrated.
The hard motor mounts cracked.
All the wheel cylinders started leaking.
The spark plug wires leaked and would shock you.
The Carburetor gaskets shrunk up leaked, the surge pumps and choke pull
offs were stiff as cardboard.
Just as a precaution I change the tranny grease in case it was hiding
moisture.
The shock absorbers seem to be ok other than hard bushings on both ends.
It has taken me about a month to get the Westy into what I term safe and
dependable.
In the miles I've driven it has had very good performance and has earned
being trusted.
I'm going to give her a run on the highway tomorrow on a 120 mile round
trip.
If any of you folks have any warnings or things I might need to be aware
of I'd appreciate a note on the subject.
This thing has a 70 up 1600 cc engine and drive, what is the crusing
speed on these things?
Thanks
Stan Wilder
