I had it chequed and it is bad. I looked at the brushes and they are shot. I went to the junk-yard and picked up three regulator/diode/brush assy's from newer alternators, and will try one of these to seeif it will do the trick. if not, I also picked up a 80 or 90 amp alternator from another car(audi or volvo...can't recall..there were so many) which I may switch into the vanagon housing as the '80 has a totally different one being air cooled, but not same as the prev air cooled vans...
