For Canadians, Canadian tire has/had "K" thermocouples for $7.00 ($5.00 USD) each. No need to order from Omega or deal with minimum orders. You will need to get some extension wire and junctions though as the leads are only about 2 feet long. I've used these for oil, coolant, air and exhaust. You can also buy cheap digital multi meters ($30 - $50) with K thermocouple inputs, radio shack and canadian tire among others have these.
