Larry; Sounds like the Hall effect sensor in the distributor is reaching the end of it's life cycle. If you have a clamp on timing light , check for spark the next time it fails. Our 85 and 86 both failed in this manner. WARNING: The connector for the Hall affect gets very brittle with age. Be very gentle when unplugging it.
