You gotta get them off to inspect them. Look for broken bearing cages, pitting of the balls or flaking, wear in the hub assemblies. If you've got split CV boots chances are you're getting excessive wear from dirt and moisture. Disassemble only one CV at a time, the ball set needs to return to the same cv it came from, otherwise they'll be noisy even if they aren't badly worn. Stan Wilder
