On my 88 I have had the same issue with the stock spring straight from the
vw dealer. I used an old set of coaxial cable crimpers.I think like $3 at
radio shack........the hole in them was large enough for me to slip over the
end of the linkage and hold the spring back. then quickly i pu t the little
clip back on..........
