David,
She is refering to an automatic transmission. GL-5 is the proper spec.
GL-6 is even better. Also, the modern GL-5 and 6 oils do not have the
compatibility problems with the Brass. The reason VW still calls for
GL-4 is due to the friction characteristics for the syncros to work.

This is incorrect - you should NOT use GL-5 in a Vanagon Transmission -
front differential is OK but not the Transmission. You must use GL-4 /
MIL 2105-5 gear oil or else you will do damage to the synchromesh due
the an incompatibility of one of the chemicals in GL-5 and the brass
used in the synchromesh.

You need a 17mm allen wrench to open the gear oil fill plug. Us a 90W or
equivalent gear oil GL5 rated. To fill, there is enough room to use the
sqeeze top on the gear oil bottle. Why do you think the oils are mixing?
Not only does this indicate bad seals but also the wrong seals,
incorrectly intalled. The proper seals have reasied edges where they
meet and there is a hole between them that goes to the bottom of the
housing. This allows any oil that gets between the seals to drain to the
ground.

Subject: Size of allen wrench for final drive?
Hello volks,
So it seems that maybe my seal from the differential to transmission is
leaking and the oils are mixing as well. I want to check my gear oil
level in the final drive before I have to take my van on the road to get
to the VW mechanic. My tranny fluid is all good as well as my engine
oil level. What size allen wrench do I need to use and what type of
gear oil? Do I just use a funnel and fill in the hole there? I just
hope that I don't do too much more damage before I get to the mechanic -
unfortunately I don't have a choice living out in the middle of nowhere.
I also have a recurring engine oil leak problem going on that maybe one
of you can shed some light on. I've been seeing a small drip coming
from the pressure relief valve. So I replaced the valve, the spring,
the gasket, and the plug. Gave the ol' boy an oil change and new Mann
filter. It seemed to do the trick, but now after a couple of weeks and
a drive across the state, its leaking there again. Any ideas? Should I
be looking somewhere else on the engine as well? If my oil cooler has
failed would that cause too much pressure build up in the engine? How
do I know if the oil cooler is working properly?
Thanks,
Marla
