Oh how I wish I could, Dennis - you have no idea :) How 'bout making a nice vacation to Martha's Vineyard? You'd have a free place to stay! (Just bring some tools, ha ha!)

Am I crazy to try and drive it up to Boston? - about an hour away.

Marla, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the brown fluid indiscates clutch slipping/burning. Yes the automatic transmission has clutches. Each gear is applied using multi-plate friction clutches, hydraulically applied. Some howm you need to find some one who knows what they are doing and plan to have the trans removed for proper repairs. Maybe you should come to Long Island! Hi Dennis - thanks for all your advice. I'm really just guessing based on what you've told me and from what I've read in the archives. I'm still loosing tranny fluid, and I was told when I bought the van that both the differential and the tranny leaked (of course I was told "don't worry about it"). I brought it to a VW guy in Sommerville (Leins Auto) was on the recommended vanagon.com list on my way home from Maine. He didn't drop the tranny, but said its a possibility. Wouldn't be surprised if the guys who put in the transmission for the PO didn't replace the seal. When I replaced the tranny filter and gasket, the oil looked brown, but didn't have any metal flakes in it. I can see visually oil on the outside of the tranny and differential bottoms. And the van has had a funny smell for a while. Maybe I just got too low on gear oil...not sure... hoping to just get it up to Boston to get looked at without doing too much more damage to it. You need a 17mm allen wrench to open the gear oil fill plug. Us a 90W or equivalent gear oil GL5 rated. To fill, there is enough room to use the sqeeze top on the gear oil bottle. Why do you think the oils are mixing? Not only does this indicate bad seals but also the wrong seals, incorrectly intalled. The proper seals have reasied edges where they meet and there is a hole between them that goes to the bottom of the housing. This allows any oil that gets between the seals to drain to the ground.

Dennis

Hello volks,

So it seems that maybe my seal from the differential to transmission is leaking and the oils are mixing as well. I want to check my gear oil level in the final drive before I have to take my van on the road to get to the VW mechanic. My tranny fluid is all good as well as my engine oil level. What size allen wrench do I need to use and what type of gear oil? Do I just use a funnel and fill in the hole there? I just hope that I don't do too much more damage before I get to the mechanic - unfortunately I don't have a choice living out in the middle of nowhere.

I also have a recurring engine oil leak problem going on that maybe one of you can shed some light on. I've been seeing a small drip coming from the pressure relief valve. So I replaced the valve, the spring, the gasket, and the plug. Gave the ol' boy an oil change and new Mann filter. It seemed to do the trick, but now after a couple of weeks and a drive across the state, its leaking there again. Any ideas? Should I be looking somewhere else on the engine as well? If my oil cooler has failed would that cause too much pressure build up in the engine? How do I know if the oil cooler is working properly?
