I have an '81 westy, it never ever overflowed until I replaced the tank and filler tube with one from... an '85. Now it overflows every &*%$#!@ time I put gas in it! It overflows at the auto-shutoff, I never try to squeeze more gas in, it's a recipe for wet shoes...
