Why not just get some tempera paints and do a little experimenting on your van? Since its washable your can reverse your art at the car wash. If you happen to create anything that you really like you can just mark your spot and repeat the process with more permanent paint. In addition to using tempera as fill colors you can use it as 'masking' for outlines like paint by number and fill in then wash the tempera off leaving nice clean edges or a stencil effect as a base for fill. I've seen big white Detroit vans at charity events that are tempera painted with tempera by disabled children or by event participants for a token donation. What I really want to see is the pumpkin blaster cannons or the pumpkin catapults, they often use a brightly colored old VW as a target. Most years they get TV coverage and you'll see many tempera paint jobs on all kinds of vehicles at the event.
