The bumper has to fisrst be bolted to the hitch. Then the hitch and bumper go on as an assembly.

Hi all,

I have just received a used Westfalia trailer hitch, and was really excited that it just slipped right on, and lined up perfectly with the existing holes in the frame etc.

Then I went to try to get the fiberglass bumper (1987 Wolfsburg Vanagon GL) attached, and saw that there are two holes in the trailer hitch, one on the bottom, and ont at the top facing rearwards. The upper one is the one which seems to be in the right position for my fiberglass bumber (I removed the existing mounts which held it onto the frame already)... but there is no room to get a bolt into the hole from the inside (car side) to the bumper (outside).

It appears that if the bumper were to have been held on by bolts from the outside, then it would be no problem... but I am wondering what I can do to make this work.

I took an ugly close-up showing the location, and I drew in an orange virtual bolt to help give you an idea of what I am talking about.

Any ideas??

Thanks,

RSF
