Those lists are helpful, since the diesel vans have more in common with
other diesel VW cars than other Vanagons, engine-wise.

Yeah...there's something really appealing about an engine that's so purely
mechanical, isn't there?  Once the glowplugs have done their work, the
only electrical item needed to keep the engine running is the fuel
solonoid.  No cranky ECU, no bad oxygen sensors, no cracked solder joints.
