Classic symptoms of an engine that needs a reseal. What's happening is
that one (or more) cylinders are leaking combustion gases into the
cooling system. Unfortunately a common problem. (My 84 is doing it as I
write...) The solution is to remove the heads and replace the o-rings
on the top of the cylinders.
As long as one religiously stays on top of the coolant level, one can
get away with driving it like that for a while. You will need to bleed
the system on a daily basis though. When the heater is blowing cold,
that's a sign that there's no coolant in the radiator. It's filled
with air. Remove the upper grill and loosen the 13mm bolt on the top
left of the radiator rather than removing the expansion tank cap.
That's the highest point in the system. If you relieve the pressure at
that point, you're removing air, not coolant. After you burp it there,
tighten the bolt and refill the expansion tank with the engine warm and
running at 2500+ rpm. That'll get you going, but a reseal *is* in your
(and my) near future.
