It's more of a slow seepage sort of leak, so a compression test won't really show it. A leakdown test (where each cylinder is brought to TDC, filled with compressed air, and the pressure drop over time is measured) would be more definative, especially if it caused bubbles to appear in the expansion tank.

There are also tests that can be done for combustion gases in the coolant. Soot or oil in the coolant is another give-away that something's amiss.
