Subject: spare tire question...
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

Hi Folks,

Quick, question about spare Vanagon tires.

I recently asked the original (and only owner) of my Westy, if they ever used the spare tire.

They told me "nope, it's never been used." It's the original tire that came with the van.

I took the tire down, and sure enough ... brand new looking, Continental "made in Germany" 185r 14 tire, complete with black rubber strips hanging off the tread every where. No sign of wear at all.

It seemed to have enough air to use, and didn't see any noticeable cracking or wear.

Should I trust a nearly 17 year old spare tire, or go to Les Schwab and have em throw a new one on for $45 bux?

Just curious,
