I've had good success with very hot water and good quality liquid detergent,
a type that rinses away cleanly, without leaving scum (NOT Dove type). Fill
1/2 way, vigourously shake, empty and rinse thrice with equally hot water,
let dry.
Probably just a little paranoid, but I'd be concerned about alcohol
dissolving glue used in some assemblies.

Cleaning a very good idea. Alcohol is the liquid of preference and I
use a small rag stuffed in to swirl around with the alcohol. You can
retrieve the rag with a pair of tweezers when your done. Make sure the
insides are perfectly dry before installing the bulbs. Use dielectric
grease
on the rubber seal and on the electrical connections.
