Hi Ed:
I just took the complete shift linkage apart to repair the rotted parts
on my 82 Westy. I got my shift rod boot from California Imports, though
the new boot does not fit as well as the old one (does not have the same
part number marking on it. VW part 3 is 251-711-167A). The boot on the
transmission gear selection shaft I had to get from VW.
I needed to replace the rubber ring on the end of the guide pin as this
was worn (CIP/Bus Depot have this). In addition I ordered the shift
linkage kit from Vanagain, that comes with all the parts that commonly
wear out in the gear shift. VW still carried the shift stop bushing that
goes on the shift linkage box (part # 091-301-261 for $8.36).
I removed and cleaned everything but the forward linkage that goes
through the bushing above the gas tank. I had previously cleaned and
greased that bushing when I dropped my tank.
I used MbSiO2 grease on everything when I reinstalled the linkage. Two
adjustments exist on the shift linkage. 1) aligning the gear shift shell
with the guide holes and 2) the clamp that connects the forward linkage
lever with the rear lever. It sounds like you need to adjust the clamp
to make sure that the rear linkage cannot move too far forward.
For proper gear adjustment, Bentleys states that the 80-83 Vanagons
needs 19 mm spacer between the shift stop. I found that to guarantee
that I did not have any confusion between 1st and 3rd, that I needed
more like 21 mm's.
Good Luck.

P.S. I found that the Haynes manual has a good procedure on doing this
repair.
Bentleys suggest a 19 mm distance when adjusting the
