I wasn't trying to minimize the work (I was hopefully trying to scare him in to not attempting it when he realized the issue with the gas tank....)

The suspension is different between 2wd and Syncro models. On the 16" variety it is more radical. In the wheel wheels there are some differences to accommodate the more travel in the suspension on the Syncro models than on the 2wd brethren.

The tank is in the rear mainly to accommodate the front transaxle (which intrudes into the space where the tank is on the 2wd model.)
