Ah...those "Ah hah! So *that's* how it works!" moments. ;)

When I bought my van it had floppy rear view mirrors that the previous owner had tried to fix with tape wrapped around the joints. Of course, this only worked (sort of) until the first rain storm I drove through. Took the mirrors off, and lo and behold, there was a nut on the bottom to adjust the tension!

They never seemed to adjust to quite the right angles, though...until one day I was looking at a picture of someone else's vanagon, and realized the long dimension of their mirrors was vertical, not horizontal like mine...that's when I realized my mirrors had been swapped left for right. In a flash it came to me... No wonder they didn't work! No wonder the wing windows hit them! Swapped them to the correct sides, and a couple of tablespoons of water drained out of each one, too, through the hole that was now on the bottom where it was supposed to be.
