Grain can scratch the reflector. Rice is especially likely to do so, unless boiled first. I wouldn't particularly recommend rubbing the lights with boiled rice.

Well, seriously, plain commercial-grade ethanol. You don't want other things in it eg sugars, as these will dry on the surfaces and MAKE a mess. Methanol or isopropyl would do as well. Need not be anything like 100% to do the job.
