Sorry, Dave .....
I've had 3 (still have 2) wasserboxers. All 3, at one
time or another, exibited the symptoms you describe.
Only one had a bad head (large crack between the valve
seats) and it showed itself when doing a compression
test. The other two didn't show a problem when
performing a compression test .... but they did have a
bad seal at the heads.
Bottom line .... New gasket set, proper clean up,
proper torquing cured two of them. New head, gasket
set ... yada yada ... cured the other one.
With the first one, I lived in denial for far too
long. With the next two .... I knew basically where
the problem was right off.
I did the jobs myself each time. Saved a ton of money
and was sure they were done right (they were mine and
I cared). I couldn't believe the sloppy work that had
been done by "Others" when I dismantled them.
One bad job was done by (according to the PO and a
receipt he provided) a place called Bug Haus in
Richmond, VA. They had not removed the old rubber O
rings around the tops of the cylinders and had slid
new ones over and past the old ones and they were
resting on the shoulders below where they should've
been. They had coated the threads on the head studs
with some kind of white sealant and ended up with
hydraulic locks when trying to torque the head capnuts
down resulting in improper torque. I could go on ....
Good luck with yours,
Mike
