Actually, VW called that model the "Vanagon Camper" in the US market, while the "full" camper's model designation was the "Camper GL". Overseas it was known as the Transporter Multivan. VW never called it a "weekender", they used that term to describe the option where the rear seat folded into a full-size bed which was available in other van models besides the campers.
