There are 2 places I would use to get 12 volts in a waterboxer engine compartment. The 13mm wiring nut on the alternator has a direct connection to the battery. Another and better protected spot is inside the black box on the driver's side front edge of the compartment. There is a metal stud inside with a few red wires to it. This stud always has 12 volts to it as one of the red wires comes from the previously mentioned 13mm nut on the alternator. No matter what, use a properly sized fuse placed very near to the source you pick if you plan to leave a wire connected.
