Subject: 1.9l Steel Pipes
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

In Ken's defense, there are 18 year old steel coolant pipes out there in good shape. I replaced mine last spring when I installed my new engine. One of the pipes was rusted through at the very end where it was clamped to the firewall in the engine compartment. The rest of the pipe was excellent, inside and out. The outside was still factory undercoated and the inside had only light speckles of rust showing. The one pipe could be used "as is" and the other easily repaired by welding a straight 4" piece on the engine end. Repair would be easy with it out of the vehicle. Since I had already picked up the new ones from the dealer (with a hefty return fee of 20%), I went ahead and installed the new ones. The old pipes are in the attic. The new ones were $160 each. It would have cost me $64 to return them! I does seem like these pipes could be reproduced for much less. The way these pipes held up, I think SS would be a waste of money, especially a cheap grade of SS.
