Sounds kind of familiar to me . . . I wonder why? Oh yeah, my van seems to be doing almost the same thing. When it got colder, my '87 Westy would cold start with some difficulty (like battery's weak, but new battery), idles rough and low for about a minute, sounding like a cylinder or two is misfiring, then bounces between 1000 and 1200 RPMs once it warms up a little. The temperature needle never (well, almost never) comes off of the white line at the bottom of the gauge. The air does warm up though after about 5-10 minutes driving . . . NOT after 5-10 minutes standing. The idle's not near as high as yours, but . . .

Curious as to what people think the problem(s) could be. Please post replies to Pat's message to me too.

Thanks, Marc Perdue

The temp gauge only goes to the top of the white section. Seems too cold to me but the heat output is fine. When the weather was warmer, the engine usually ran at about 900 RPM. Is this normal or do I have a problem? > > I also wanted opinions on the compression. I checked it & it was 140, 140, 140, 135. Seems to be the bottom of the scale. Van runs pretty good with no apparent oil burning. Thanks. > > Pat Callaghan > 87 Westy GL > Portland, OR. > www.patcal.com
