At my previous job I used a Garmin GPS III plus. My usual routine was to connect the Garmin to a Dell Latitude running Delorme Street Atlas. The display on the III plus, IV and V is a bit small to be using in a vehicle but is fine hand held. I believe the V has the color LCD you're looking for. The III plus I used was dragged all over the country, used hard and put up wet a lot. It worked well at sea level, at 3000 ft in a Cessna, at 120F in Austin, -2F in Wyoming, in rain and fog in Washington, and on the dusty Navajo Nation in south east Utah. As long as the batteries were fresh it was happy.

I've also used Delorme's Tripmate which isn't bad for a cheap piece of crap (no display so it must be attached to a computer), a couple of different Magellan units (one was an older milspec piece that was awful) and a Raytheon. The accuracy was about the same with all of them.
