The Tiico is not smog legal in California... Although the Tiico conversion is going through the exemption process, it could take several years and LOTS of paperwork. Enough to discourage kit manufacturers.

The only kit that has a CARB exemption is KEP's Subaru conversion.

If the state referee (not a smog station employee) won't look at their van, there's a slim chance that a referee in another city will. Have them try this.

Your friends really should have researched CARB exemptions before doing any modifications. Their van may either end up sitting in the driveway for years (waiting on CARB exemption), or may take that last lonely journey to the scrap heap.

Hello: I have some friends who recently completed a tiico conversion here in CA on an '84 vanagon. Unfortuneatly, the smog referee, who is job it is to certify cars with significant engine modifications now tells them that he won't even look at their vehicle. This means that within the month they'll lose their car registration. Does anyone have any experience with this or ways to work around the problem? The tiico site says that they're going through an "exemption process" does anyone have an update on this and when it may be expected?

Thanks much.
